Od XVII wieku Francja wiedzie prym wśród światowych producentów perfum, przede wszystkim dzięki talentowi perfumiarzy z Grasse i z Paryża. Dwór Ludwika XV, zwanego przez poddanych "Ukochanym", znany był jako "uperfumowany dwór". Król życzył sobie by każdego dnia jego apartamenty pachniały inaczej. Perfumowano także wodę w fontannach ogrodowych pałacu Tuileries.

W roku 1743 król postanowił ozdobić park zamku w Marly rzeźbą Guillaume'a Cousteau. To wspaniałe dzieło można dziś podziwiać na Polach Elizejskich, i to od niego marka "Parfums de Marly" bierze swoja nazwę.
